Intro to Perinatal Mental Health for Behavioral Health Professionals

  • This continuing education class introduces behavioral health professionals to Perinatal Mental Health basics such as risk factors, mental health conditions, and common treatment modalities specific to the perinatal period, including therapeutic techniques and current medication best practices. The course provides insight to relevant maternal health conditions and experiences that impact mental health, allowing behavioral health specialists to most effectively support clients during the perinatal period. Case studies and interactive discussions will enhance understanding, and especially, application of key concepts. Participants will leave feeling confident about their ability to identify and work with, or refer clients appropriately. Information for specializing in the field will be provided. 

  • Behavioral health professionals, including therapists, counselors, and social workers, who are new to the field of perinatal mental health or seeking a refresher on foundational topics.

    • What “Perinatal Mental Health” is, who it impacts, prevalence, and why it is so important for all Behavioral Health professionals to have basic foundational knowledge of this topic

    • Risk factors, signs and symptoms and special considerations for a spectrum of PMH conditions, including Baby Blues, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Psychosis, Anxiety, OCD, Birth Trauma, PTSD, and Maternal Substance Misuse Disorder

    • Understanding the unique maternal factors and experiences that impact mental health during the perinatal period

    • Addressing PMH within various populations: fathers and other caretakers, people of color, LGBTQ+, and more

    • An introduction to common therapeutic techniques and medication best practices

    • The importance of partners and/or other support systems in addressing PMH needs

Intro to Perinatal Mental Health for Maternal Child Health Professionals

  • This continuing education unit class provides maternal health professionals with essential knowledge about perinatal mental health such as risk factors, mental health conditions, and common treatment options specific to the perinatal period, including therapeutic techniques and current medication best practices. Participants will gain skills in screening and recognizing symptoms, providing appropriate support, and coordinating care with behavioral health professionals, allowing maternal health specialists to most effectively support clients during the perinatal period. The class includes practical exercises and strategies for integrating mental health considerations into maternal health practices, enhancing understanding and application of key concepts.

    Participants will leave feeling confident about their ability to identify, screen, and refer clients appropriately. Information for specializing in the field will be shared

  • Maternal and Child Health professionals including midwives, OBs, lactation consultants, doulas, Pediatricians, Emergency medicine providers, Home visitors, community health workers, childcare workers and more!
